Synopsis
The intention of this paper is to offer some results of continued research on SALT for the large size classes, about which the author has already published as a paper "Experimental Application of SALT Method to the Large Number of Technological Studentsn on the September issue of the Proceedings of PSIJ in 1979. Although it was an intermediate report based only on half year experience, the present one summarizes all the works extending to nearly an year and half period.
After Apri1 1980, the class size has expanded to 200 from 180 of the last year. The application principle of SALT method, or "once for every five lessons" has been the same as the last year's case even now. But,the improvement in educational technique was made within class hours, i. e. the preliminary suggestion process before activ and passive sessions was mostly replaced by picture demonstrations with the background music, e. g. such as Spectrum Suite. The teacher just pinpointed the remarkable part in the picture by proper indicator without oral explanation. Fortunately, we have a set of special picture projection device in the audio-visual class room.
This device is GE LUPJ-5000 Xenon lamp TV projector at the back of the screen and the TV camera on the teacherls table.By this means, the color pictures of any size in the original books or periodicals
may be shown to the students directly on large frosted glass sscreen.
Of course, the teacher have to give simple suggestion before the demonstration, but it may not take so long a time. The students zealously gazed at the pictures and whole the class was very quiet. They seemed so concentrated in the pictures that they didn't noticed the musical sounds. Thus the effect of learning is considered to be enhanced by giving both audio and visual stimulations.
The statistical results of examination tests were compared with the former case. At least, superior group in the class increased a little and the inferior group markedly decreased.
The author is with the Tokai University and is now a Professor at Takanawa College Campus.
